MGR Government Film and Television Institute is an advanced Institute imparting film techniques and aesthetics of Film ,Television Production, Animation & Visual Effects and Allied Subjects and Film Appreciation.
It is one of the three major institutes in India. The other two are Film and TV Institute of India, Pune, and Sathyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, Kolkata. MGR Government Film and Television Institute is the only institute which offers four year degree courses.
This premier Film Institute is run by the Government of Tamil Nadu and is functioning under the administrative control of the Director of Information and Public Relations.
BACHELOR OF VISUAL ARTS DEGREE COURSES
Four year degree courses are offered in the following branches:
- Cinematography
- Digital Intermediate
- Audiography
- Direction and Screen Play Writing
- Film Editing
- Animation and Visual Effects
All the Degree Courses are offered in affiliation with Tamilnadu Music and Fine Arts University.
Fourteen students are admitted in each discipline
Notification for admission to courses is published in leading Tamil and English newspapers and admissions commence in May of every academic year. Tuition fees of Rs.15,000/-, Special fees of Rs.2,000/- and Development fees of Rs.1,000/- are collected from the students.
SHORT FILM AWARD
The Government of Tamil Nadu appreciates and encourages the students by presenting an award titled "MGR Government Film and Television Institute Award” which consists of One Sovereign Gold Medal,Cash Award of Rs.5,000/- and a memento to the Best Director, Best Cinematographer, Best Editor, Best Sound Recordist and Best Film Processor of the Short Films produced.
TRAINING ON LATEST EQUIPMENT
The Government sanctioned Rs.1.5 crores per annum for hiring of the latest equipment and accessories for the final year project film making and training on par with film industry professional standards
